Cascade blackberry

Name
: Cascade blackberry

Botanical name: Rubus ursinus x loganberry 'Cascade'

Light requirements: The Cascade blackberry needs full sun to produce the best fruit. It should receive at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight each day.

Soil and watering needs: This blackberry variety prefers well-drained, fertile soil. Regular watering is important, especially during the growing season and fruit development, but avoid waterlogging the soil.

Description: Cascade blackberry is known for its large, firm berries with a sweet and tangy flavor. The berries are typically dark purple to black when ripe, usually ripening in mid to late summer. This variety is recognized for its vigorous growth and long, trailing canes. It's a cross between the Pacific Northwest native blackberry and the loganberry. These are fairly rare now, but they're making a comeback. All of ours are descendants of the Cascade blackberries Joe's grandma planted in the 1940s. They're definitely one of our favorites!

Medicinal and other uses: Blackberries are high in vitamins, fiber, and antioxidants. They are popular for fresh eating, jams, jellies, desserts, and beverages due to their rich flavor.

Origin and distribution: Cascade blackberry is a cultivated variety, introduced in 1940 and bred for its fruit quality and productivity. It is suitable for growing in temperate regions and is popular in home gardens and for commercial berry production.

Interesting facts: The Cascade variety is valued for its high yield and large, flavorful berries. It's known for its trailing growth habit, which can be supported with trellises or other structures. The plant is relatively hardy and can tolerate a range of growing conditions.

Ideal conditions and care: Regular pruning is important for the Cascade blackberry to remove old canes and encourage new growth. Providing support structures like trellises can help manage the canes and improve berry production. This variety is relatively easy to care for due to its adaptability and hardiness.
